What does skin look like?

The dermis contains helpful cells called “phagocytes” that removes harmful substances from our bodies such as “bad” bacteria or impurities.
- Subcutaneous fat. The bottom layer, directly below the dermis layer and can also be known as “subcutis”. It helps keeps your body warm while regulating body temperature. It protects large blood vessels and acts as a cushion to surrounding, vital organs.
What are the functions of your skin and how it keeps us healthy?
The skin works round the clock to ensure that it works properly and providing that it does its job well in its homeostasis. The skin has many roles that it performs such as preventing moisture loss which is vital for healthy skin.
While it retains moisture through the natural oils and allowing the skin to appear youthful, it is best to keep it stable by avoiding over bathing, harsh washes or even hot temperatures.
The skin also protects against pathogens as it acts as a powerful barrier to external irritants, environmental pollutants as it is the first line of defence and simply by washing your skin can keep skin clean and free from potential infections and disease.
You skin goes through skin shedding which are the process of dead skin cells which shed off naturally and are replaced by newer skin cells that have been manufactured in the blood-rich base layers of the epidermis.
New skin cells naturally rise to the outer surface of your skin over the course of about thirty days. Naturally, skin cells gradually die as they become increasingly thinner and flatter.
Overall, your skin is a natural replenishing organ. Your skin is always being bombarded by “bad” germs, both from the outside and the inside.
The skin also produces sweat which allows harmful substances to pass through the skin’s ducts which is produced in the glands of the dermis. Sweat allows for the removal of impurities and exfoliates skin naturally while keeping the body hydrated and cool.
The skin does so much and there are many other more functions that are not mentioned above in the list, that the skin does for our bodies and health, it is no wonder that we should treat it with much respect and treat with kindness at all times.
Developing skin conditions can be the result of a wide range of factors that may stem from a poor diet, stress, lack of nutrition, as well as external factors such as excessive hand washing, using chemical filled products, strong sun exposure, picking of the skin and more.
