Clay is a natural substance which are the remains of volcanic ash and derived from the ground. It’s essentially decomposed rock within the earth’s crust. It maybe such a widespread substance on earth and common to find in an area where there is water around such as lakes or streams. Clay is made up of soft, loose earthy components that appear grainy and rich in minerals.

Highly alkalizing : Clay is naturally in the PH between 8 to 10 range. Although you tend to find clay in the earth typically mixed up with soil referred as “Clay Soil”. Pros And Cons
There has been massive speculation of clay over the years, some scientists claim that “more research has to be done” and also over the false claims that clay performs. While there are mixed feelings and opinions, you should judge for yourself and may be used for short term or long term depending on how you feel.
A great productive and versatile substance due to the use of drinking with it for health.
It is safe to use internally and externally and clears out heavy metals and chemicals, but always check with the company of purchase how to use safely.
Some types are used in construction and is energy-efficient due to their excellent insulation properties. It is natural and safe in value. Great economical use in brick walls or porcelain.
Cons : Very Messy! It can be very gloopy and appear muddy, depending on the type you obtain. It can be extremely wet when mixed with water as it holds water well.
There is no substantial medical evidence as biologists have claimed clay to be unsafe if consumed for a long time as it can lead to health problems.
When used as “clay soil” in gardens, it compacts easily, making it difficult for plants to grow. Heaves in winter and tough when dry.
Different types Of Clay
What makes each clay different from the rest is the particle size and the chemical and molecular properties. Here I will be exploring the varied range, but not limited, of the clay powders available.
- Bentonite Clay – There is sodium bentonite clay which is often use externally and used in drilling mud for oil and a powerful sealant for a barrier. You can also obtain sodium bentonite for internal use too.
There is Calcium bentonite clay for internal use that is gentle on the digestive tract and a popular choice to aid in detoxifying the bodies. Generally, you can ingest 1 heaped tablespoon in warm or cold water. You can increase the amount of tablespoons over time such as 3/4 tablespoons per your needs.
- White Kaolin Clay – This is rich in silicon, aluminium and silicate and is recognized as the most mild clay available. Very useful in dealing with skin conditions such as dry, itchy, flaky skin and can normalize skin from sun damage or Acne. It consists of essential phyto-nutrients that cleanses and defends the skin as well. It regulates the PH levels and acidity within the body. Can be used internally or externally.
- Diatomaceous Earth – This type of clay consists of around 15 trace elements including copper, iron, selenium and made from fossils of marine plants and mined from old lake beds.
The main component involved is Silicon Dioxide and one of the main food sources for marine life. When you use diatomaceous earth clay, ensure it is only food grade and safe for human consumption. You can take 1 tablespoon in water, 30 minutes before eating food. It is said to improve the appearance of hair, skin and your metabolism.
- Zeolite Clay- A mineral clay that naturally occurs when ash and lava fell into the sea millions of years ago and is of volcanic origin.
The possible benefits can include in reducing free radicals, improving nutrient absorption and bring about balanced PH levels of the blood. It can be used externally or internally. Again 1/2 tablespoons of clay mixed in water can allow for a cleaner, healthier body.
- Green Clay – This is considered “the queen of clay” for its high mineral content and its high absorbent rate to allow drawing out toxins and foreign substances. It is highly alkalizing of a PH around 8.9 and has a strong negative charge allowing it to work efficiently more. It may remineralise cells and clear up the digestive tract. It is for external and internal use.

My Personal Experience
I am writing here about how body bentonite clay powder truly helped and cleared up my skin. Years ago, I got a skin condition which left my skin itchy and red for a long while, although hesitant in the use of medication given to me by doctors, be it creams or capsules.
Although they are important to try while looking for alternatives or if you simply have no other options then it can help you but please avoid long term use.
My point is that I would use bentonite clay food grade as a mud mask, every single night, until my skin normalized itself.
I would mix around 2 to 3 spoons of clay with some water until it formed muddy or a thick gloop if you like, similar to heavy thick cream or thick yogurt and smeared on my face for around 20-25 minutes. I would then take it all off gently with damp facial cloths and it always calmed the redness skin that I had and felt better. I really don’t know what I’d have done without it!
Clay Is Natural
Clay is mostly harmless and if reluctant to drink internally which may not be necessary anyway, you can use to clear up skin surfaces effectively and in the most gentle way possible. It not only removes away dead skin cells, debris, nuisance marks but always leaves a refreshed glow!
You can also use health bath and body products with clay. With the added benefits of clay involved such as deodorants balms, talcum powders or toothpaste which are highly effective.
Honest! It’s beneficial for external use and I have only ever used clay on my skin for years and years and the only thing that has helped my skin.
